Pallavas and Chalukas

pallavas and chalukyas

By the end of 6th century Ad, two important dynasties emerged in South India which were -
  1. Chalukyas of Badami
  2. Pallavas of Kanchi
From the very beginning both the dynasties started to fight with each other on the question of controlling very fertile Tungabhadra doab (area between Kaveri and Tungabhadra river).

Initially, Chalukya ruler Pulakeshin II defeated Pallava ruler Mahendra Varman and captured are of Vengi (Amaravati). This area of Vengi was handed over to Vishnu Vardhan who later founded Eastern branch of Chalukyas at Vengi.

Mahendra Varman's son Narsimha Varman decided to take revenge and captured the fertile area as such he attacked on Chalukya capital Badami and defeated Pulakeshin II. He also captured the Chalukya capital Badami (Vatapi).

To celebrate his victory, he took the title of 'Vatapikondi' means conqueror of Vatapi.

Both the dynasties were known for their contribution to the temple architecture in South India. Pallavas initiated rock-cut architecture which later transformed itself into Dravidian Style of Temple Architecture and Chalukyas initiated Vesara Style of Temple Architecture.
